Football
We recently completed the fifth season of Ojai Valley School eight-man football. The first four seasons were successful in many ways. They provided tremendous growth opportunities to the athletes involved by testing their abilities to learn and demonstrate new skills. Additionally, home games brought the Upper Campus and Lower Campus students and faculty out to the field, providing tremendous support for the team and bringing the two campuses together.
The new fall season will be a time of learning for all involved. As a new sport to the school, teaching the fundamentals of the game is imperative. The primary goal will be to be competitive no matter the opponent. Sports provide a tremendous opportunity to explore one’s self in dealing with successes and failures that present themselves. What I ask of my players is simple: Do what you are supposed to, when you are supposed to do it, and how you are supposed to do it. If the team follows this simple credo, we will be successful.
Football is a physical contact sport. During the first few weeks of the season, the team will be working on its physical conditioning. It is important that during the summer players work on their conditioning. I encourage student/athletes to run on a daily basis to develop leg strength and stamina. I also recommend that student/athletes work on hand strength; squeezing a soft ball is a simple exercise to perform. If a weight training facility is available, I encourage student/athletes to perform upper and lower body exercises to strengthen themselves (ask a trainer at the facility to demonstrate proper exercises). If you have any questions, please contact me at (805) 646-5593. I look forward to seeing you in the upcoming year. Craig Floyd Athletic Director craigfloyd@ovs.org
