| Carl grew up at Ojai Valley School, and that has provided him a lifetime of opportunities to apply the OVS wholeness of life philosophy. His father, Robert G. Cooper, was the first headmaster of the Upper School, taking the reins in 1964 after serving as a popular teacher and coach. That was the same year Carl graduated from the Lower Campus, and he followed four years later with a diploma from the Upper Campus.
His years at OVS were filled with sports and studies, camping and a bit of mischief. But they were formative years; time that shaped his belief that learning takes place in many ways and in many places. That is at the core of his philosophy today. A ubiquitous presence on campus - usually with his golden lab, Harley, at his side - he is a confidant and a cheerleader, urging students and faculty to reach beyond limits, take on challenges, and try again should they fail. Whether coaching on the sideline or taking over a class for a teacher, he preaches the gospel of character and integrity, of participation and positive contribution.
And he remains a participant himself. After nearly four decades, he has distinguished himself as the longest-serving soccer coach in the Condor League. He leads the annual Honors Ski Trip to the Yosemite Valley, and launches each school year by inviting student leaders to join him a week early to prepare the campus for opening. Today, OVS is literally his home, as he and his wife, Jody, reside on the hill. |
